I’ve spent my free time today fighting through the crash of my hosting server that was so bad my databases were corrupted. Now, what does that mean for ya’ll? Basically, everything on the site (posts, comments, pictures) are entries into a database (DB). The pages themselves are merely templates which are filled in from the DBs. Once those DBs are gone, so goes the site. So, I’ve reinstalled the site program and the photo gallery, too. The good news is that ya’ll can comment on the posts now. The bad news is that all of the accounts are gone; ya’ll will have to re-register to comment. We’ll see how that goes.

Since I was doing a complete reinstall, I wanted to delete both directories completely out and start from scratch. Not only because the DBs were trashed but to also fix the inability to add comments to posts. One of the better things of Unix / Solaris / Linux / Mac is that to delete a program, delete the folder. No searching throughout the OS or hard drive looking for little snippets of code that’ll blow everything up without the main program. Drag, drop or click and delete. Gone. Nadda. Bye-bye.

Except for when the server decides that not only will you delete the inteded directory but a couple other directories as well. That then becomes another problem. Having fun yet? So, a quick call the Help Desk shows that my site is still on the same, problematic server and that they’re still “working the issue.” Who’da guessed? In any case, they restore the missing directories and I’m grunging away at this EASY task.

So far, as you can tell, I have the main site up and running. Now, I have to tweak it back to where I had it. Meanwhile, I’m still working on installing the gallery and then I’ll tweak that, too. I’ve added another page to show some of the neater things on this here Intarwebz. Details to follow.

Cheers!!
