As many times as I’ve driven between Köln and Aachen, I’ve always wanted to stop at the Michael Schumacher go kart center. As the boys have just gotten back from Camp, I decided to take the kids today. Wow!!

First of all, the center is located right off of the A4 and is only about 45 minutes away, so its very easy to get to. Once there, there were no language problems either. For €22 we were able to get two sessions, which were about 9 laps each and each lap was about a minute, depending upon one’s skills. ;)

For me, this was an opportunity to hang out with Jon, Matt and Nyssa, my kids. Yeah, it was cool racing around the track but what was even better was the excitement in their voices and eyes after the sessions. I know that they’ve ridden go karts before, in some form or another, but nothing as sophisticated as the MS Center.

Of course, they had to get onto me about a real go kart versus Maggie and the unfair advantage I from driving Maggie, but they really had a blast.

What I found interesting was that Matt was told by the staff to slow down several times and Jon spent a lot of time stuck in a corner or facing the wrong way. Seems that Matt was interested in a bumper car version of racing and Jon was experimenting with power sliding around the corners. Nyssa, on the other hand, was more interested in making it around the track, especially with the “pro’s” running around her. I’m sure that, with more practice, she’ll easily become a terror!!

Interestingly, the Center prints out session information about how each person did.

This shows data such as the max speed, best lap and each lap time. I will admit that there was a bit of an advantage of having Maggie and running this track! :> I’d forgotten how tight my forearms get after racing go karts but it was immense fun! And I think the kids enjoyed it, too!!!

So, the question is will these guys get on board for a ‘Ring run or will I take the kids back to the track??

Cheers!!

  1. Why do the two things have to be exclusive?

Take the kids back, regardless of the Ring days.

Oh, and take the kids to the Ring days, too. For their professional development.
